Radiotracer Synthesis Group
The main goal of this group is the development of specific PET radioligands for diagnostic application in patients with tumours and neurological disorders. The focus of research is in the area of tumor hypoxia, assessment of tumor extracellular space ("edema") and the evaluation of selective and high affinity radioligands for the ionotropic and metabotropic glutamate receptors. The small animal
QUAD HIDAC PET camera, operational since the middle of 2001, is being used routinely for the validation of new PET radiopharmaceuticals in rodents. Another key area of research is "drug development" whereby surrogate markers are being used to study drug effects and to determine receptor occupancy and dosage regimen of newly developed pharmaceuticals in collaboration with the pharmaceutical industry.
Collaborations exist outside the Center for Radiopharmaceutical Science among others with Prof. Gustav K. von Schulthess, University Hospital Zurich, Prof. G. Folkers, ETH Zurich, Associate Prof. Franz W. Vollenweider, Psychiatric Hospital Zurich and pharmaceutical industries.
